How do you feel when your favorite manhwa gets an anime adaptation? Today i will discuss one of the famous Webtoons that got an anime adaptation. The anime called: Tower Of God works belonging to SIU or those with the real name Lee Jong-hwi.
The manga was first published on Naver Webtoon Korea since 2010 and has entered season 3. As for Indonesia itself, it has started airing on the Webtoon Line since 2016 until now and updates every Monday.
In 2019 Crunchyroll announced that they would be producing their own original anime series and adapting Webtoon Tower of God. In collaboration with Telecom Animation Film, Tower of God is a very ambitious project for all parties involved.
The reason? Because Tower of God is king of the king from all Webtoon. For those who know the world of anime / manga, it is no exaggeration to say that the position of Tower of God in the world of Webtoon is equivalent to that of One Piece in the world of manga. During the decade it was released, Tower of God has consistently been the Webtoon's most popular and has the most vocal fanbase. The existence of this anime is highly anticipated. How is the result?
- Let's start from the Story line and Plot.
Tower of God is an anime that tells the story of a mysterious tower. It is said, any hope that someone who has reached the top of the tower will be granted. Many people hope to get the opportunity to climb this tower.
The story begins with a friendship between a woman named Rachel and a boy named Yoru. The two of them were both thrown into the tower out of desire. From there they both separate and undergo their respective training and tower entrance exams. They met many fellow would-be climbers of other towers.
Tower of God season one is quite effective. Because this anime describes the story of the climbers trying to pass the entrance exam. In this process many things happened. From losing friends to betrayals by many people. Interestingly, this anime has a tight "secrecy" and a back and forth plot. Viewers who have never read the comics will be curious.
- My opinion on this anime.
One of the strongest points that Webtoon lovers are often proud of is the World Building from the Tower of God, and for me it doesn't translate well enough into the anime format.
Although I have watched all the episodes, I still feel confused about the world concept of Tower of God. What kind of world is this actually? Is it a normal human world with a unique Tower in the middle? Is it a fantasy world? How is the relationship between the races outside this Tower? Everything is not clearly illustrated, so it makes me a little confused to follow it.
Okay, I understand that this is only season 1 and this anime of course won't open their trump card regarding everything in it, but for me, until the end of season 1 more question marks popped into my head than the answers I got. Which is not something I really like.
The second thing is the background of each character in this story. In this matter I am neutral. There are several characters who seem to be only used for jokes in this story such as Rak Wraithraiser, so this anime doesn't mention its past at all. On the other hand, there is also the figure of Khun Aguero Agnis and the Princess Jahad who have an interesting past and make me want to know more about their characters. But Ironically, it is the main character: Baam, who to me has no appeal at all. I felt that as an MC, Baam was a very flat, one-note, boring character. Strange...
For the episode that I liked the most, it was episode 13 which was the most stressful and emotional episode. Yup, it was the final ending episode of the first season. We see Bam character who is trying to save and protect Rachel is betrayed by this woman. Who would have thought that a character loved by the main character betrayed him at the most crucial moment for potential climbers?
Favorite Characters
In season one, my favorite character fell to Khun. Unlike other characters, Khun is a vengeful but intelligent figure. He also has intelligence above other climbers and a pretty cool weapon. The weapon is a bag that can double items. Even more interesting, he is a character with limited information. We still don't know what Khun's goals are and what strength he has apart from his intelligence and agility. I was always amazed that Khun (Spoiler Alert) cleverly put two weak men into the tower through his bag. What a plot twist ~
So that's a review of the first season of Tower of God anime. So, how is it? Are you interested in watching this anime? Please tell me what do you think about the anime and if you have other anime that you want me to discuss put it on the comment section below. Thank you.
